Mikey...
The Enterprise or "Big E" is the ship that Dad came back from Europe on after the war was over. I can remember him talking about it's size!

The "at Sea" pix were probably taken while on the way home on the Big E. Typical rough N Atlantic weather!

Ah ha! Okay, thanks Dad. I was thinking he came home on the Enterprise after seeing pics he took on the deck. The USS Enterprise made two Magic Carpet rides from Southampton, the last of which arrived in NY on Christmas Eve. I wonder which of the two trips Grandpa was on, I'm leaning toward guessing the last of the two.
I've already received a lot of input from a few people on flickr who have identified locations/buildings/etc.
So far, anyone I have attempted to contact thinking they would be interested in the pics (like the National WWII museum in New Orleans) have not responded to emails.
It was Christmas!! I can remember him coming home and he handed me a small canvas bag full of coins that he had collected while he was in Europe. It was late at night when he arrived. Probably this is my earliest lasting childhood memory... Great Stuff!
Wow Dad, you just gave me goosebumps thinking about Grandpa coming home Christmas eve and you as a little boy waiting up for him. Thanks for sharing that.
I think I'm going to search and see if the NYTimes had a write-up about that night.
Fantastic - I'm so glad that there is all this documentic evidence being reinforced by childhood memories - good stuff!!
Oh, all this history! How I wish that all these pictures could have been organized so many years earlier so that Capt. Belin could have had the chance to write down his memories behind each picture. What a loss of personal history.
Time travel - where are you when we need you the most!!
On another note - I'm going to the library tomorrow to view all these pictures - my dialup system just doesn't make it ....
I wish I could talk to him too.
I've looked through these pictures many times now, each time something else catches my eye and my brain attempts to put each "bit" together in the form of a life story.
I feel like there are lots of significant images throughout, keep trying to contact different groups to let them know about all the pics just in case someone else is searching for something the images hold. So far, no response from anyone. I guess it would just be neat to talk with someone who knew a lot about all these images and was passionate about passing on their knowledge. I'm not sure that I am adequately expressing myself at the moment, merf! Oh well, I have learned a lot (with respect to what I knew before seeing these photos) about WWII. I feel like I have gotten to know a little about grandpa through his "eyes." Which I will be forever thankful and appreciative to Dad and Cheryl for sharing these with me.
Mikey,
If it's not to much of a bother do you think you could send me Hi Rez Jpgs for rols 2, 3 & 4. I am fascinated by thos images and can't help but wonder what Dad was thinking about as he took each one. The fact that they are all B&W's make them all the more captivating to me. I can almost get into his head as he looked out on that Stormy Ocean and thought about what he was coming from and where he was going!!!

It would be no trouble at all Dad! I'll burn them on to CD's and send them to you. And I know what you mean about being captivated by the images... I feel in some small way I have come to know Grandpa too.
Speaking of getting to "know" folks, this past weekend I had a three-way call with two of your "new" nieces. They have a picture that belonged to Grandpa's first wife, "Sylvia" - of Grandpa. Apparently, Sylvia kept this photo of your Dad in her desk drawer and would from time to time, pull the photo out and show it to the girls telling them they were related to him... sounds sweet huh? Well the photo is of your dad, in a tree, naked as a j-bird! I laughed so hard when they told me this.
They promised me they would try to find the photo and send me a copy.
Oh my LORD! I'm not sure I'm ready for that... Too Funny!!!
And thanks for the pictures..
