Rain Barrel update

this is where the barrel ended up parked at. I think I should have dropped the position of the spigot at least an inch lower. I really like Dad's idea of making a collar that catches even more rain. Currently the barrel has been out since Oct 8, and the water level is just now getting above the spigot.

One last note: Make sure that Skeeters can't get to the standing water or else you will have 10 million of them in a perfect incubator...

I lied... another comment

Looking at the size of the opening being roughly the size of the barrel top to bottom you will see an increase in water level of roughly 1 inch for every inch of rain that falls. Soooo If you have a real soaker and the weather report says that you have gotten 5" of rain fall thats how high the water level will rise in your bbl as a result. The trick is to make the "Mouth" of the bbl larger in diameter than the diameter of the BBL. Think of a funnel........

The Elizabethan collar Dozer has might be perfect for this, or maybe two glued together. It was only $10 at my vet's.

I agree - since you don't have it located under a gutter spout, putting some kind of larger collar on the top to funnel more water into the barrel would be a big help.

Someday, I'd like to build a "rain collection barn" over at Possum Hollow .... maybe rain off your garage roof could be collected and directed into your barrel with a hose.
